Day 1 - Getting to Know you and Syllabus

Remember to turn in your syllabus, signed!

Today we got to know each other and looked at the syllabus. We have a lot of great stuff in store for you!

Remember that if you need anything, Mr. Smith and Mr. Johnston are here to help you - we have  a variety of ways to help you succeed in this class and will work with you to create conditions for you to succeed.

Course Overview:
This class will provide students with a foundation for understanding the History of the modern world. In conjunction with the state standards, we will look at the chronology, patterns, themes and relationships of history from absolute monarchs and the enlightenment to the present. In addition, we will try to understand the past through the perspectives of those who lived it.


Rules/Expectations:
1. Be on time
2. Be prepared for class daily
*Bring Class textbook
*Bring notebook and notebook paper
*Bring pen and/or pencil
3. Respect your classmates
4. Use language appropriate for the school setting
5. No food or drinks (except water)
6. Work hard in and out of the classroom
7. No cell phones or headphones in class
*Failure to comply with these rules may result in a one-on-one meeting with teacher, phone call home, detention or administrative action.


Grading:
Grades for the course will be determined on a total points system. Letter grades are as follows:
A = 90%-100% Superior, special recognition
B = 80%-89% Above average, exceeds regular requirements
C = 70%-79% Average, meets regular requirements
D = 60%=69% Below average, fulfills minimum requirements
F = 59% and below Failing, minimum requirements not met, lack of competence demonstrated


Grades will be based on tests, homework assignments, class participation, group projects, and attendance.Any item turned in after the due date is late and will receive 1/2 credit. and must be completed before the unit exam. Homework detention takes place with Mr. Smith in the morning before school and enables students to earn up to 80% on a given assignment. Students with an excused absence have as many days to make up the work as the number of days they were absent, plus 2 days. YOU THE STUDENT are responsible for finding out what assignments/quizzes/tests/etc. were missed. Do this before or after class. Students and parents or guardians will have access to updated grades and assignments online. Students with unexcused absences will not be able to make up the assignment; test or project missed and will receive 0pts for the missed work.


Borderline grades will never be rounded down, however, rounding up will be based on teacher’s discretion-factors such as class citizenship, participation and overall effort will be considered.


Attendance/Tardy Policy:
Students are expected to attend class on a daily basis. Tardies classify as not being in the classroom when the bell rings. Discipline policy for tardies will be as follows:


1st and 2nd unexcused Verbal notification in class
3rd Unexcused Short detention (30 minutes)
4th Unexcused Long detention (90 minutes)
5th + Unexcused Referral to Administration and (150 minutes detention)


Classroom Assistance:
Any student needing extra help can set up a time to meet with me before or after school or during my prep period (2nd block for Fall Semester of 2014 school year). I am also available via email or by phone for any questions or concerns.
